On the 20th & 21st March, This is Creative Enterprise hosted a 2 day ‘Creative Careers’ Day in association with Newcastle College, School of Creative Industries, Ashington High School and Ashington Learning Partnership. Clare Hughes, Business Development Officer within the school’s HE Unit help to design and organise the two day event which gave insight and advice into further and higher educational routes into creative career options to the Year 10 groups. Here’s how it all went…
The two days provided by TICE and Newcastle College were a part of the Year 10 Careers & Future Pathways Week organised by Ashington Learning Partnership to support students interests in a variety of progressional routes. TICE and Clare (Newcastle College) happily stepped in for the creative sector and organised for the two days to showcase career development and opportunities.
Both days started within the School of Creative Industries in the HE Unit. This unit is a hub for the business development team to give advice and guidance to FE & HE creative students at the college. Clare and her team are able to discuss with students their next steps, organise work placements and give crucial advise and guidance about professional conduct and development. It was an ideal place to start discussing with students what creative industries was really all about, particularly it’s scope and the areas it involved.
All the students were given various short tasks to complete based around subjects, jobs and routes into creative pathways. This really opened there eyes to the variety on offer not only in the college itself but what the creative sector actually entailed.
Both days were completed by a fantastic tour of first the Art & Design Building and then onto the Performing Arts Building just a short walk away in Ryehill Campus. The students not got to speak with current students, creative lecturers but also hear a band playing to their fellow course mates.
A fantastic couple of days had by all. TICE would especially like to thank Clare and her team at Newcastle College for all the effort and preparation put into the the two days. It was brilliant, thank you!
