Hirst Park

For two weeks of the summer holidays TICE were involved with Hirst Park Middle’s Summer School. The idea behind this fun filled fortnight was to create a comic book promoting the Tyneside and Northumberland area.  For more in depth details the blog can be found at www.hirstparksummerschool.wordpress.com however here’s a brief overview of what they got up to…

Week one – As part of the research gathering, our students spent two days during Summer School on an open top bus tour capturing images of the local area’s iconic sites. The first day included exciting Northumberland sites including Northumberlandia, Morwick Dairy and Newbiggin by the Sea.

The second day of the bus tour included a visit to the Hancock Museum, and a full stadium tour of St James’ Park, this was a dream come true for our Newcastle supporters!

Week two – Characters came to life during the second week of Summer School; our student’s imaginations were running wild with inspiration from the previous trips and tours. A series of storyboards were created with an extra-added challenge of a character competition. Students were invited to Potts Printers in Cramlington to see their comic characters being printed hot off the press!

Towards the end of the week students worked with a local chef to test recipes for the family feast finale!
