Katie Lee (Photography)

Hi, I’m Katie and I’m the photography mentor on the TICE. I’ve been mentoring with TICE since…and have loved every minute.

I’ve been a professional photographer for 20 years and I absolutely love what I do. I studied photography in Edinburgh and once my degree was finished I wanted nothing more than to work in the profession. I was lucky enough to get a junior photographers job at a new newspaper called The Sunday Herald in 1999, from here I worked my way up until I got a senior staff photographers position at The Sunday Times in 2001. I was there for 5 years and it was the most exciting time, getting to travel around Scotland and the world.

Since moving back to North East in 2007 I have been a freelance photographer and have worked for a variety of clients. My job is never the same from month to month and I genuinely believe that to be successful in any creative enterprise you must always be developing personally, creatively and in your business. When I first came home I did a lot of wedding photography alongside editorial and PR work. I enjoyed this work but it wasn’t something I saw being for forever. I then moved into Interior photography and that is where the majority of my work is now. I work for major, national interior magazines such as Ideal Home, House Beautiful and 25 Beautiful Homes and not only do I love the work but I also get to meet some inspirational people and get to nosey round their homes!

I decided to do a teaching qualification in 2011 as I really wanted to try and inspire the next generation of photographers and felt I had a lot to give. I was then lucky enough to meet Jen and from there my TICE mentoring began.

When I’m not working I love nothing more pottering around in my allotment, walking my dog in our stunning countryside and socialising with friends and family. I have owned horses (before children) and if I get the chance I can be found riding round our stunning countryside too.

I am hugely passionate about what I do and I hope this comes across in the workshops.  The photography course will teach students how to view the world in a totally different way, making the ordinary extraordinary and along with this the confidence to realise their creative ideas and the potential to turn photography and visual imagery into a career. The market is changing so fast with digital imaging and social media and the course will show students how this can all be developed into a career that they will love.
