To kick off our TICE Fashion Silver Stage this year we went straight back to the award winning fashion department at Northumbria University. Not only do we feel that it’s vitally important that our TICE students start to recognise job roles and careers within the fashion and textile industry, it’s also extremely important to see one way of getting there! So, our day started with meeting Ann Marie Kirkbride a Senior Lecturer in Fashion here at the university to tell us all about the 3 degree programmes on offer: BA (Hons) Fashion, BA (Hons) Fashion Communication and BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing & Design.
After hearing all about the courses, Ann Marie invited three current fashion students to come along and talk to TICE students about their experiences. The students not only discussed their course but also the transition from school through to higher education and then took them around on a tour of the fashion facilities from studios to machine rooms plus answered any questions our young TICE students may have had. What better insight into studying fashion than hearing from students themselves!
After the tour, we then got down to business. We really did. What our next session was all about was talking about what the fashion industry actually is. We discussed fashion markets through to basic fashion theory and asking the students to identify different market levels ready for our task ahead.
Once fashion theory was complete, and a spot of lunch, we hit the town. Only a short walk over the bridge is Newcastle city centre. The students were tasked with coming up with a shop report about a certain fashion brand. Once in stores, the students had many questions to ask store staff who very kindly gave us some insight into their customers and the brand itself.
After their challenge, it was back to base. Each team was then to describe the fashion brand they visited without revealing who it was. The other teams had to guess using the fashion knowledge from earlier this morning to figure out what brand and market level the team had visited.
The final element to complete our first silver stage day was having a lovely guest speaker along. TICE fashion invited Katy Dobinson from the blog http://www.girlinthenorth.com/ to speak with the TICE students about her journey in sourcing work experience and in general opportunities during, whilst and after university. It was a fantastic insight into her steer determination and following her interests and passion to discover what her career could look like. Plus phoning Vogue US to speak with Anna Wintour!
All in all, a fantastic day. We loved it, we hope the TICE fashion students loved it and hopefully everyone took something away from the day!
